-
A drawing of a woman with a scroll, seated facing left, and two bearded men, bust length. The drawing is one of a series of schematic studies by (or attributed to) Reni at Windsor, some of which correspond with chiaroscuro woodcuts by his collaborator Bartolomeo Coriolano (RCIN 903379-86). The present drawings may therefore be studies for unexecuted woodcuts. The figure of the sibyl alone is at 903379.
The drawing was catalogued by Kurz (in K(B)) as a copy, but was attributed to Reni by H. McBurney and N. Turner, 'Drawings by Guido Reni for Woodcuts by Bartolomeo Coriolano', Print Quarterly, 1988, pp. 226-42.Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 80, ‘Guido &c. Tom. 4’, among ‘8 by Guido, with a Pen, For Coriolanus to imitate in Wood-cuts’
