Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
A study of hands c.1613-14
-
A study of hands folded across the body of a figure in clerical robes. This is a study for the figure of St Charles Borromeo in Reni's huge Madonna della Pietà (or Pietà dei Mendicanti), painted as the high altar of the Chiesa dei Mendicanti in Bologna and now in the Pinacoteca.
Three further drawings for the composition are in the Palazzo Rosso, Genoa, one of which is inscribed by Reni with the date 13 November 1613, establishing that Reni was then working on the design (though he was still in Rome at that date). The painting was installed in the church by November 1616. Two further studies for the painting are at RCIN 903355-6; a further study for the hands of St Charles is in the Morgan Library, inv. 1980.7.
See Guido Reni: Zeichnungen, Vienna 1981, no. 51; S. Pepper, Guido Reni, 1984, under no. 46.Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 80, ‘Guido &c. Tom. 4’, among ’18 Studies for Draperies’.
