Pier Francesco Cittadini (1613/16-81)
The Return of the Prodigal Son
-
A drawing illustrating the last episode in the parable of the Return of the Prodigal Son: the young penitent kneels before his stooping father as attendants stand behind, one carrying a mantle with which to clothe the son. To the left a servant slaughters a calf in preparation for a celebratory feast, while another man, perhaps intended as the elder son, stands gesturing towards the main scene. This is one of six drawings in the Royal Collection, from Cittadini's cycle of the Parable of the Prodigal Son: RCIN 903268-903273.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III from the collection of Consul Joseph Smith, c.1762; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-20 (Inv.A, p.79: '6 of the Parable of the Prodigal Son, by Millanese, Scholar of Guido')
