The Prodigal Son as a swineherd

A drawing of the Prodigal Son on his knees amongst pigs, wishing he could eat his share of the pods that the swine around him are enjoying. This is one of six drawings in the Royal Collection, from Cittadini's cycle of the Parable of the Prodigal Son: RCIN 903268-903273. This composition, which ultimately goes back to Dürer, is based on Jacques Callot's etching.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III from the collection of Consul Joseph Smith, c.1762; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-20 (Inv.A, p.79: '6 of the Parable of the Prodigal Son, by Millanese, Scholar of Guido')
