Pier Francesco Cittadini (1613/16-81)
The Prodigal Son receiving his portion
-
A drawing of a scene outside a grand villa, with the father of the Prodigal behind a table from which he hands his smartly dressed son a bag of money. A groom attends to the Prodigal's horse, while a servant descends the steps of the house carrying part of his master's luggage. This is one of six drawings in the Royal Collection, from Cittadini's cycle of the Parable of the Prodigal Son: RCIN 903268-903273.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III from the collection of Consul Joseph Smith, c.1762; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-20 (Inv.A, p.79: '6 of the Parable of the Prodigal Son, by Millanese, Scholar of Guido')
