A drawing of Bacchus, nude, standing to the left, with his hand to his chest, and Ariadne seated to the right in an attitude of surprise. The figures are essentially copied from Guido Reni's larger composition of the same subject, painted 1637-40 for Queen Henrietta Maria, destroyed in 1650 but known through copies and engravings.
Provenance
Probably purchased by Richard Dalton on behalf of George III c.1760; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 79: as 'Cantarini')
