School of Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
The head of San Filippo Neri (?) 1600-50
-
A drawing of the head of a bearded man, looking up to left. Kurz (in K(B)) catalogued the drawing as of the school of Reni, and suggested that it might be for a painting of San Filippo Neri. It was included in the exhibition 'La Regola e la Fama: San Filippo Neri e l'arte' in 1994 as an autograph study by Guido for the painting of The Vision of San Filippo Neri, of c.1614, in Santa Maria in Vallicella, Rome; but the position of the head is not the same, and though the drawing is rubbed and so difficult to judge, it does not seem strong enough to be by Guido.
Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 79, ‘Teste di Guido. Tom. 1’, among ’51 Heads, as Studies for various Pictures amongst which are some exceeding fine Drawings as large as life, all by Guido Rheni, Bolognese’.
