The head of a bearded man c.1600-40
-
A drawing of the head of an old bearded man, profile left.
Kurz (in K(B)) noted that a similar head occurs in Reni's Assumption of the Virgin in Genoa (though did not claim that the drawing is a study for that painting) and that the same model was studied in 903310. That latter sheet was claimed by M. Calogero ('Drawing Tradition: Malvasia, Alfonso Lombardi and the use of models in Bologna', Master Drawings, LIX, 2021, pp. 193-208) to be drawn from a cast of the head of an apostle in Alfonso Lombardi's Death of the Virgin ensemble in Santa Maria della Vita, Bologna, but Calogero (p. 207, n. 24) did not think the present drawing was clearly related to Alfonso's sculptures.
The present drawing was accepted as autograph in C. Johnston, The Drawings of Guido Reni, PhD diss., 1974, no. 102, whereas 903310 was not. But 903310 is much more acceptable as Reni that the present sheet, and the two drawings may have been mixed up by Johnston. In a pencil note on the mount, B. Bohn (note on mount, 2008) suggests an attribution of the present sheet to G.A. Sirani, by comparison to Uffizi 20234-F, 20235-F.Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 79, ‘Teste di Guido. Tom. 1’, among ’51 Heads, as Studies for various Pictures amongst which are some exceeding fine Drawings as large as life, all by Guido Rheni, Bolognese’.
