After Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
A seated Sibyl c. 1700-50
-
An offset from a drawing of a Sibyl, seated three-quarter length, with the upper part of her body half turned to the right; she leans her chin on her raised left hand. She is wearing a voluminous dress, and a large turban. This offset is from a study, now untraced, for one of the Sibyls in the frescoes of the drum of Piacenza Cathedral (see also RCIN 902693, 902437, 902933, 902798, 902893, 902688, 902887, 902391).
RCIN 903173 seems also to have been offset from this same drawing, but after some extensive shading had been added.
This is one of 116 offsets not listed in Inventory A (RCIN 903079-903195). The following note in an old, but later, hand is found overleaf on p. 72 of the inventory: 'There appears to be no Catalogue of the drawings of Guercino, termed off-tracts contained in Volumes XV & XVI of his Works.'Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63
