Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist c. 1700-50
-
An offset of a drawing of two figures, over half length: St John the Evangelist is seated on the left looking upwards and to the right at St John the Baptist, who stands on the right looking down at him while pointing upwards and holding his reed cross to his shoulder.
This is an offset after a drawing in the Los Angeles County Museum (inv. no. M. 78.25) for the altarpiece of The Madonna and Child with Saints Lucy, Francis, John the Evangelist and John the Baptist, painted in 1631-2 for the church of S. Giovanni Battista in Pesaro, of which only a small fragment survives. Representations of the Evangelist and the Baptist also occur in another offset connected with the altarpiece, RCIN 903116.
This is one of 116 offsets not listed in Inventory A (RCIN 903079-903195). The following note in an old, but later, hand is found overleaf on p. 72 of the inventory: 'There appears to be no Catalogue of the drawings of Guercino, termed off-tracts contained in Volumes XV & XVI of his Works.'Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63
