After Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
St Gregory the Thaumaturge c. 1700-50
-
An offset of a drawing of St Gregory, shown three-quarter length, turned to the right, and apparently kneeling. His head is upturned and his left arm is extended. He wears a mitre and cope.
This offset is from a red chalk drawing, now untraced, which showed St. Gregory in a similar pose to that in which he appears in a pen drawing by Guercino in the Teylers Museum at Haarlem. The Haarlem drawing is a study for the altarpiece of The Madonna with Saints John the Evangelist and Gregory the Thaumaturge, completed in 1630 for the church of S. Vincenzo at Modena, for which RCIN 902376 is also a study.
This is one of 116 offsets not listed in Inventory A (RCIN 903079-903195). The following note in an old, but later, hand is found overleaf on p. 72 of the inventory: 'There appears to be no Catalogue of the drawings of Guercino, termed off-tracts contained in Volumes XV & XVI of his Works.'Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63
