After Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
A bearded semi-nude man holding a knife c. 1700-50
-
An offset of a drawing of a bearded man, standing three-quarter length, wearing a drapery which covers his right arm, waist, and legs, and which is held in place with his left hand in which he also holds a knife. He looks to the left with his right hand on his hip. His left elbow rests against what is apparently a block of stone on the extreme right. The figure may possibly be intended as a St Bartholomew.
This is one of 116 offsets not listed in Inventory A (RCIN 903079-903195). The following note in an old, but later, hand is found overleaf on p. 72 of the inventory: 'There appears to be no Catalogue of the drawings of Guercino, termed off-tracts contained in Volumes XV & XVI of his Works.'Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63
