The Blessed Felix of Cantalice advancing towards a dead infant lying on a bed c. 1700-1750
-
An offset of a drawing of the Blessed Felix standing three-quarter length on the right, with his head covered by his cowl; he bends over to the left with his arms opened in front of him on either side of the corpse of an infant, which lies naked on a mattress placed on a bed or table. The drawing is apparently connected with a painting of this subject, formerly in the Chiesa dei Cappuccini, which no longer exists due to war damage sustained in the period 1940-45. See also RCIN 902890, 903155, 903037, 903129.
This is one of 116 offsets not listed in Inventory A (RCIN 903079-903195). The following note in an old, but later, hand is found overleaf on p. 72 of the inventory: 'There appears to be no Catalogue of the drawings of Guercino, termed off-tracts contained in Volumes XV & XVI of his Works.'Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63
