Red chalk offset, retouched in red chalk of a darker tone | 25.6 x 19.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 903155

After Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
The Blessed Felix of Cantalice resuscitating a child
-
An offset of a full-length composition drawing in which the mother of a child is seated on the right, supporting the child's body and looking to the left at the Capuchin saint, who walks towards them and takes hold of the child's right arm with his left hand, while holding a sack in his right hand. On the extreme left another Capuchin, partly visible, watched the scene.
This is an offset of RCIN 902890, produced before the drawing was completed. RCIN 902890 was an autograph study related to a painting of this subject, now lost. This offset, together with two others (RCIN 903037, 903129) are important for the evidence they provide towards understanding the evolution of the composition of the painting.
This is one of 116 offsets not listed in Inventory A (RCIN 903079-903195). The following note in an old, but later, hand is found overleaf on p. 72 of the inventory: 'There appears to be no Catalogue of the drawings of Guercino, termed off-tracts contained in Volumes XV & XVI of his Works.'Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63
