After Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
St Jerome in a landscape c. 1700-50
-
An offset of a drawing of St Jerome, standing half length in front of rocks and shrubbery, with his semi-nude body turned slightly to the left as he looks downwards to the right at a book lying open in the bottom right corner. He appears to rest his left elbow on the book, with his right hand placed at his chest. This offset was probably taken from the same original drawing as another offset, RCIN 902524. The original drawing is untraced. This offset was retouched, with considerable variations from RCIN 902524, and at a much later date- probably in the eighteenth century. This is one of 116 offsets not listed in Inventory A (RCIN 903079-903195). The following note in an old, but later, hand is found overleaf on p. 72 of the inventory: 'There appears to be no Catalogue of the drawings of Guercino, termed off-tracts contained in Volumes XV & XVI of his Works.'
