After Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
The Madonna kneeling, wearing a shawl over her head c. 1700-50
-
An offset of a drawing of the Madonna kneeling full length, in profile to the right; with a cloth loosely draped over her arms, which are extended in front of her, as if she were about to take an object into them. This offset and another, RCIN 902377, are apparently related to The Presentation of the Christ Child of 1623 in the Mahon Collection.
Although only the figure of the Madonna is shown in RCIN 903113, she appears in the same sense and in much the same pose as in RCIN 902377.
This is one of 116 offsets not listed in Inventory A. The following note in an old, but later, hand is found overleaf on p. 72 of the inventory: 'There appears to be no Catalogue of the drawings of Guercino, termed off-tracts contained in Volumes XV & XVI of his Works.'Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63
