After Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
Flora/Primavera c. 1700-50
-
An offset of a drawing of Flora, over half length, with her body turned slightly to the right but with her head, on which she wears a wreath of flowers, turned slightly to the left. She holds a bunch of flowers in her right hand, and casts a chain of flowers over her head with her raised left hand.
This offset is derived from a drawing preparatory to a painting of Flora from the workshop of Guercino, now in the Galleria Doria-Pamphili, Rome. The workshop assistants probably made use of an original drawing by Guercino, from which RCIN 903108 was taken.
This is one of 116 offsets not listed in Inventory A (RCIN 903079-903195). The following note in an old, but later, hand is found overleaf on p. 72 of the inventory: 'There appears to be no Catalogue of the drawings of Guercino, termed off-tracts contained in Volumes XV & XVI of his Works.'Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63
