-
An offset from RCIN 902788, recording a full-length composition of The Finding of the True Cross, an altarpiece in the church of S Lazzaro dei Mendicanti, Venice. St Helen kneels on the right; on the left a woman sits upon a bier having been revived by the Cross, which is held over her body and which she embraces; the Cross is supported by two men. In the centre background is a faintly indicated bishop with a crozier. This offset has been considerably altered by extensive retouching, involving the loss of many details. For another offset after a drawing of this subject, see RCIN 903104.
This is one of 116 offsets not listed in Inventory A (RCIN 903079-903195). The following note in an old, but later, hand is found overleaf on p. 72 of the inventory: 'There appears to be no Catalogue of the drawings of Guercino, termed off-tracts contained in Volumes XV & XVI of his Works.'Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63
