The Death of Dido c. 1700-50
-
An offset of a full-length composition drawing in the centre of which Dido reclines on the pyre with a sword transfixing her body just beneath her exposed right breast. On the left are two female mourners. On the right, before the base of a column, are three more women, one of whom kneels tearfully in the foreground while behind her the other two stand gesturing excitedly. In the background figures stand on the seashore, and in the distance are two boats.
This offset records a phase of the development of the whole composition of the painting of The Death of Dido, in the Galleria Spada, Rome. RCIN 902834 is a related autograph drawing. RCIN 903024, 903023 and RCIN 903121 are offsets of further related drawings.
This is one of 116 offsets not listed in Inventory A (RCIN 903079-903195). The following note in an old, but later, hand is found overleaf on p. 72 of the inventory: 'There appears to be no Catalogue of the drawings of Guercino, termed off-tracts contained in Volumes XV & XVI of his Works.'Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63
