God the Father c. 1700-50
-
An offset of a drawing of God the Father, half length, surrounded by fluttering draperies and wearing a heavy cloak over his shoulders. His head is turned slightly to the left. His right hand rests on a globe placed amongst clouds. He points downwards to the left with his left hand. This is offset from a drawing now in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh (inv. no. D.3122), which is a study for Guercino's altarpiece of The Annunciation, painted in 1648 for the church of S Filippo at Forli, now in the Pinacoteca Comunale, Forli.
This is one of 116 offsets not listed in Inventory A (RCIN 903079-903195). The following note in an old, but later, hand is found overleaf on p. 72 of the inventory: 'There appears to be no Catalogue of the drawings of Guercino, termed off-tracts contained in Volumes XV & XVI of his Works.'Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63
