After Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
St Francis reading from a book with his right hand placed upon his head c. 1750
-
An offset from a drawing of St Francis, half length, behind what appears to be a ledge on which a book stands, propped up against a skull. He is turned towards the left, and appears to hold his cowl to his head with his right hand, while apparently holding his drapery to his body with his left.
This representation of St Francis is closely related to, but not identical with, three others: first an apparently autograph red chalk drawing in the Lawrence M. Corbell Collection at Santa Monica; secondly, to an extensively retouched red chalk offset in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no. 2341), which seems to have derived from the Corbell drawing; thirdly, to a drawing, now lost, recorded in an engraving by Stefano Mulinari dated 1797.Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.72, as 'Ditto' [i.e. St.Francis])
