-
An offset of a drawing of St Francis, kneeling in profile to the left, with his cowl pulled over his head. In front of him there appears to be a block of stone, or a simple altar. He gazes at the crucifix which he holds in front of him with his left hand, while supporting his head upon his right hand and resting his elbow on the block of stone.
A related red chalk drawing by Guercino portraying the saint in a similar kneeling attitude is in the collection of HRH Princess Juliana of the Netherlands.Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.72: 'St.Francis')
