-
An offset of a full-length composition drawing in which St Anthony kneels on the left with his hands crossed on his breast. The Infant Christ, standing on a block of stone to the right, moves in the direction of the saint and extends both hands towards his left shoulder. On the ground are the saint's attribute of a lily on the left, and an open book on the right.
This offset resembles in reverse Guercino's altarpiece of the subject in San Giovanni in Persiceto, Collegiata. For a related offset, see RCIN 903075.Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.69: 'Child Jesus appearing to young St.Anthony')
