The Blessed Felix of Cantalice (Beato Felice Cappuccino) resuscitating a Child c. 1700-50
-
An offset of a full-length composition drawing in which the mother of a child, kneeling on the left behind the child's wooden bed, looks at the Blessed Felix with her hands clasped in prayer. The saint, carrying a sack, walks towards the child, taking hold of its left hand. On the extreme right another Capuchin friar watches the scene with both hands raised in wonderment.
This offset is related to a painting of this subject, now lost, for which RCIN 902890 was an autograph study. RCIN 903037, together with two other offsets (RCIN 903155, 903129) are important for the evidence they provide towards understanding the evolution of the composition of the painting.Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.71: 'A Desciple of St.Francis raising a dead Child to life')
