-
An offset of a drawing of three figures standing, half length, behind a parapet, with Christ in the centre. He is nearly nude and his head is turned downwards to the right, almost in profile. On the right stands a dignitary wearing a turban, and on the left a soldier in armour presses the crown of thorns onto the head of Christ. This offset is taken from RCIN 902467, a study for the Ecce Homo in the Bavarian State collections, now at Schleissheim.
Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.71: 'Christ crown'd with Thorns')
