A nude putto kneeling, pulling at a drapery c. 1700-50
-
An offset of a drawing of a putto, kneeling full length, apparently on a ledge, as he pulls at the drapery on the right. His body leans over to the left and his back is turned to the viewer.
The drawing from which this was offset is in the British Museum (inv. no. 1952-1-21-45). It is a study for a figure in the frieze of putti painted in full colour as opposed to grisaille, immediately above the arcade in the drum of the crossing in the Cathedral at Piacenza.Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.69: 'Two Boys design'd for a painting on a Frieze or some Compartment')
