After Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
Two nude putti in clouds, one with wings c. 1700-50
-
An offset of a drawing of two putti, the one on the right being winged and almost full length. He flies forwards with his left arm raised. To the left and behind the first is another putto, who lies on a cloud with his head in profile to the left and with most of his body covered by the cloud.
This offset and another offset, RCIN 902970, are clearly related although the technical explanation for this relationship is uncertain since both offsets have been extensively retouched, thus obscuring the graphic procedure employed. They relate to an altarpiece of The Madonna of the Rosary, with Saints Dominic and Catherine of Siena, in the church of S Marco at Osimo.Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.69)
