Four nude putti among clouds, two with flowers c. 1700-50
-
An offset of a drawing of four putti, with a winged putto flying forward to the right of centre. He takes some flowers in his right hand. At the top right, behind a cloud on top of which are flowers, another putto, only partly visible, raises his right arm while placing his left hand near the flowers. Half-way up the sheet to the left, a third putto lies in profile to the left on a cloud. A fourth putto flies above him and turns his head back to look downwards to the right.
The lost drawing from which this offset was taken was once in an album sold at Sotheby's, London, on 22 June 1949. This drawing is likely to be connected with the altarpiece of The Madonna of the Rosary, with Saints Dominic and Catherine of Siena in the church of S Marco at Osimo. RCIN 902971 is another offset of a drawing related to the altarpiece.Provenance
Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.69)
