School of Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
Two studies of a head of a woman c. 1646
-
Two studies of a head of a woman; she wears drapery over her hair and looks down to the right. The head in the lower part of the sheet is turned slightly more to the right than that in the upper part.
These seem to be studies for the head of the Madonna. It is possible that they may have been made in Guercino's studio when he was planning the figure of the Madonna in the Circumcision of 1646, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon.Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.68: one of a group of 42 drawings; 'mostly Heads, and some few half length single Figures'. This group comprises RCIN 902921 to 902962 inclusive.)
