School of Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
A man carrying a letter c. 1645
-
A drawing of a man, standing half length, in profile to the left. He holds a letter in his right hand. His left hand rests on the hilt of his sword. Possibly connected to Semiramis at her Toilet Receiving a Messenger, formerly in the Northbrook Collection.
This figure may represent the messenger who gives Semiramis the news of the revolt at Babylon. Guercino painted three pictures of this subject. Although it is by a school hand it is probably related on stylistic grounds to the last of the three - that is, the picture paid for by Cardinal Cornaro on 22 December 1645 (Libro dei Conti, 1808, p. 111 ; 1841, p. 326), which may be identical with the painting formerly in the Northbrook Collection, but now untraced.Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.67: 'A Messenger')
