A drawing of a female figure, seated full length, with her body turned slightly to the right and her legs to the left. She looks upwards and rests a lighted torch held in her right hand on a pile of arms in the lower right corner.
There are more than 800 drawings in the Royal Library by the Bolognese artist Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as il Guercino (Italian for 'the squinter'). This drawing appears to be a compositional study, but no related painting is known.
Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.67: 'Emblem of Painting')
