A half-length composition drawing with a young soldier, on the left, holding the garment with his left hand, while he casts three dice with his right; in the centre a second soldier, bearded and wearing a plumed helmet, looks at the dice and rests both hands on the hilt of his sword; on the right the third figure, partly bald, leans on the table. Probably the finished design from which G.B.Pasqualini made his engraving.
Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.65)
