Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
The seated Christ Child with the Cross c. 1657-8
-
A drawing of the Christ Child, seated full length, facing the spectator, holding the tall Cross upright to his body, and supporting the tip of its cross-beam with his raised left hand. Possibly connected with the Seated Christ Child with the Cross, Methuen Collection, Corsham Court.
This drawing is clearly related to an autograph study by Guercino on the verso of a drawing in the Teylers Museum at Haarlem. In his biography of the artist, Malvasia cites three pictures of the Christ Child under the years 1657 and 1658, only the last two of which could correspond to the Corsham Court painting.Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.63)
