The Annunciation c. 1638-9
-
A half-length composition drawing with, on the left, the angel carrying a lily in his right hand and gesturing with his left; on the right is the Madonna, in profile to the left, with her hands crossed on her breast.
The relationship of the figures to each other, their poses, and the costume of the angel are somewhat reminiscent of The Annunciation, Ospedale Maggiore, Milan, painted in 1638-9. See also RCIN 902490, 902491.Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.61)
