Attributed to Benedetto Gennari (Cento 1633-Bologna 1715)
A girl seated behind a table, reading c. 1650-70
-
A drawing of a young woman, half length, with her body facing the spectator, but with her head bent slightly downwards and to the right as she looks at an open book on which she places her right hand, while resting her left forearm on the table behind the book. Visible through the paper near the top of the head of the figure is an inscription on the verso in ink: Genaro. An identical inscription appears on the verso of RCIN 902548, and the two drawings are surely by the same hand. Presumably the drawings are by Benedetto Gennari the younger, or by his brother Cesare.
Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.61)
