A full-length composition drawing in which the nude figure of the saint lies parallel to the foreground plane, with his head on the right and his crossed legs on the left; behind him in the centre is an old bearded man attending to a wound in the saint's left arm; to the left kneel two women, one holding forward a basin in both hands and the other taking a sponge from the basin in her right hand. A study for the painting in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna.
Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.61)
