Recto: a half-length composition drawing with the saint in the act of writing in a book; he looks forward towards the left at the accompanying angel, who is seen in profile to right. Study possibly related to a lost painting of The Madonna and Child with Saint Matthew and Saint Andrew Corsini. Verso: a group of three-quarter length figures, with a young man talking to two women; on the left another weeping woman, turned to the left. Study related to The Death of Dido, Galleria Spada, Rome.

Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.61)
