School of Guercino (Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
The youthful Saint John the Baptist preaching c. 1641
-
A drawing of St John the Baptist seated, nearly full length, almost nude and facing the spectator. He points upwards with his right hand and holds a reed cross, which rests against his left shoulder, in the other hand. Inscribed in brown ink in the lower left corner: 14.
This is connected with the composition of the painting made for Ferdinand II in 1641, and now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. It is likely to be a copy after an untraced study by Guercino for that painting, and may be by the same hand as RCIN 902407 and RCIN 902495.Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.60)
