A full-length composition drawing in which the Infant Baptist is seated on a low rock, holding a reed cross upright in his left hand and looking downwards at a scroll, which hangs between both hands.
Etched in reverse, with elaborations, by F. Bartolozzi (Boydell, I, 12; Calabi 2133).Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.60)
