A full-length composition drawing in which Abraham, wearing a turban, is seated on the left, with his head in profile to the right; in the centre Hagar kneels with a handkerchief raised to her face; the child Ishmael stands naked on the right clutching her hand. Possibly an early study for The Expulsion of Hagar, Brera, Milan.
Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari; from whose descendants purchased by Richard Dalton for George III, c.1758-63; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.60: 'Abraham, Hagar & Ishmael')
