Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
A standing woman c.1600-20
-
Two sketches of a heavily draped woman, turned to the left, looking up in a gesture of smiling adoration.
The sheet comes from the Carracci sequence, and was attributed to Agostino by Wittkower (in W(C)). Nicholas Turner first asserted Guido Reni's authorship (N. Turner, 'A new drawing by Guido Reni for the Crocifissione dei Cappuccini', in Dal disegno all'opera compiuta, ed. M. Di Giampaolo, 1987, pp. 143-50, note 10), and this attribution has since been generally accepted (eg by Ann Sutherland Harris, note on mount). The purpose of the sketch is unknown, but the watermark of a bird on hills in a circle is typically Roman, so this sketch may have been made during Reni's Roman years (1601-14). -
