Two sketches of 'Roman Charity': a woman suckling an old man.
The sheet comes from the Carracci sequence, and was attributed to Agostino by Wittkower (in W(C)). Nicholas Turner asserted Guido Reni's authorship, as another study for the composition on the verso of RCIN 902304, which has on its recto Reni's studies for his Crucifixion of c.1617-18 (N. Turner, 'A new drawing by Guido Reni for the Crocifissione dei Cappuccini', in Dal disegno all'opera compiuta, ed. M. Di Giampaolo, 1987, pp. 143-50), and this attribution has since been generally accepted (eg by Ann Sutherland Harris, note on mount, 1997).
No autograph painting by Reni of Roman Charity survives, but several versions of such a composition associated with his name are known: see a summary in S. Pepper, Guido Reni, 1984, p.300. The watermark of a bird on hills in a circle is typically Roman, so this sketch may have been made during Reni's Roman years (1601-14). -
