Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
The Christ Child with the Infant Baptist; The Madonna and Child (verso) 1620-40
-
On the recto, a drawing of the Christ Child, seated, holding his right hand to the chin of the infant Baptist, who stands with arms folded across his chest; and a separate study of the Christ Child seated. On the verso, a drawing of the Madonna and (sleeping?) Child, showing through the paper.
The drawing comes from the Carracci sequence, and was catalogued as School of Reni by Kurz (in K(B)). It is however an autograph study by Reni, and the Madonna and Child recognised by Veronika Birke as a study for his etching of the Madonna and Child in a circle (Bartsch XVIII, p. 280, no. 4; V. Birke, The Illustrated Bartsch, 40 (Commentary, Part 1), 1987, p. 331). Ann Sutherland Harris concurred with the attribution (note on mount, 1997).Provenance
From the Carracci volumes; listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800-20, p. 77, 'Caracci Tom. 10', among '34 Sketches with a pen by....Anib & Agos: Caracci'
