Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
Alexander and Roxana (?) c.1610-20
-
A sketch of two standing figures, a man in classical garb addressing a woman who leans on a pedestal with cushions; another man behind, and two further sketches of the woman.
The drawing comes from the Carracci sequence and was attributed to Agostino by Wittkower (in W(C)). Catherine Johnston recognised Guido Reni's authorship and identified the sheet with the drawing in the posthumous inventory of Silvestro Bonfiglioli, Bologna, 1696: 'Un Dissegno con due figure, una di Donna, a l'altra di un Soldato, mano di Guido' (C. Johnston, The drawings of Guido Reni, PhD thesis, Courtauld 1974, no. 202).
The subject of the drawing is uncertain (and is discussed in detail by V. Birke, Guido Reni: Ziechnungen, Albertina 1981, no. 127). The attitudes of the figures are similar to Reni's Bacchus and Ariadne, but the woman here is comfortably arrayed, not abandoned on a rocky shore; Wittkower's suggestion of Alexander and Roxana is more plausible.
Detailed studies of the drapery of the woman are to be found at 903360 and 903468, suggesting that Reni did work this up into a full composition, but no related painting is known.Provenance
Possibly Silvestro Bonfiglioli, Bologna, 1696; in which case Zaccaria Sagredo, Venice, 1728; Consul Joseph Smith, Venice, 1752; from whom bought by George III, 1762.
