Ludovico Carracci (Bologna 1555-Bologna 1619)
The Birth of the Virgin c. 1605
-
A squared study for Ludovico's fresco formerly in the choir of the cathedral of Piacenza, now detached and in the Palazzo Vescovile. The seated woman on the right is lightly traced through to the verso.
The project was worked on by Ludovico and Camillo Procaccino, though the only mention of Ludovico in documents (as opposed to letters) is a payment of 11 June 1605 (see G. Feigenbaum, Ludovico Carracci, PhD thesis, 1984, pp. 380-97 for a transcription of the documents; P. Ceschi Lavagetto, ‘La pittura del Seicento nelle chiese e palazzi di Piacenza’, in La pittura in Emilia e in Romagna, ed. J. Bentini and L. Fornari Schianchi, Milan 1993, II, pp. 114-52, suggesting that Ludovico was called in to the project when Procaccini proved unwilling to execute all the frescoes, having obligations to the monks of San Sisto). Malvasia reported that Ranuccio Farnese chose Procaccini for the project and Bishop Rangoni chose Ludovico (1841, I, 213) but there is no corroboration for Farnese involvement in the documents. -
