Ludovico Carracci (Bologna 1555-Bologna 1619)
A study of a flying angel c.1595
-
A study of a flying angel with billowing drapery, for Ludovico's painting of the Pool of Bethesda now in the Pinacoteca, Bologna.
The painting was executed for the chapel of Giulio Torfanini (or Trofanini) in San Giorgio in Poggiale, Bologna, ceded to him on 14 September 1592. Torfanini's will of 26 December 1594 (he died soon after) charged his heirs to "far ornare, e dipingere" the chapel to a sum of 1200 lire. His principal heir Giovanni Torfanini does seem to have overseen the completion of the chapel in the following year, as testified by marble inscriptions recorded on the walls of the chapel, which was largely destroyed by bombing in 1944. While it is possible that this date refers only to the "fittings" of the chapel, and that the altarpiece was delivered later, a date of around 1595 fits well with the style of the painting and may be presumed to be the date of the drawing.
Although the drawing comes from the Carracci sequence, it was catalogued by Blunt (in B(R), following an annotation on the mount by Bodmer) as by Lanfranco.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810, among drawings by the Carracci
