Azor c.1604

A drawing of a seated draped figure accompanied by a child, copied from the figures painted by Michelangelo in a lunette of the Sistine Chapel.
It would be natural to date the drawing to the commencement of Annibale's work in the Galleria Farnese, which depends so profoundly on Michelangelo's example of ninety years earlier. But as Joannides noted (Michelangelo and his Influence, 1996, no. 52, 'in the Farnese gallery Annibale's Michelangelism is vivacious and lighthearted. The strength and simplicity of the present drawing and the fact that Annibale chose to copy one of Michelangelo's more restrained and withdrawn figures suggest rather that it dates from after the completion of the scheme, perhaps around 1604, when Annibale's style was developing a greater solidity and profound relief.' -
