Pen and ink with wash and white heightening, over red chalk, on discoloured paper | 26.0 x 19.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 901776

Domenico Maria Canuti (1620-84)
St Onophrius and St Blaise (San Biagio)
-
A drawing of a hermit lying to the left beneath a tree, and a bishop saint (holding a wool comb?) standing before him, with a youth kneeling at his side. The figures may represent St Onuphrius and St Blaise. There is an unidentified armorial collector's stamp (perhaps related to Lugt 1893, Dukes of Mantua) top right. Inscribed on the mount, lower left: Caracci.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, as by the Caracci, p. 73: 'Saints, Hermits, a Martyrdom, Birth of Christ')
