-
A drawing of Cardinal Girolamo Agucchi (1555–1605), full length, three quarters right. A study for the portrait in the Uffizi, Florence, painted between 9 June 1604, when Agucchi was created cardinal, and his death on 27 April 1605.
The drawing conforms closely to the Uffizi portrait. The sheet, which can be localised within a period of eight months, is of primary importance for the dating of Domenichino's early work. The tentative handling and paper can be compared to other early figure drawings (see RCIN900864) and studies for the Munich Susanna and the Elders (JPH 254 – 257).
Provenance
Bequeathed to Francesco Raspantino; by whom sold to Carlo Maratti, after 1664; by whom sold to Clement XI, 1703; by whom bequeathed to Cardinal Alessandro Albani, 1721; from whom purchased by George III, 1762
