A bearded man 1603-04
Black and white chalks on dark blue paper | 22.6 x 28.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 900864
-
A study of a bearded man, half length, his right hand raised to his head.
This is one of eight figure drawings by Domenichino that may be tentatively assigned to the years 1603–4, when the artist was working on the loggia frescoes in the Palazzo Farnese (JPH 1280–87). They are executed on the dark blue-grey paper also used for Domenichino's Portrait of Cardinal Agucchi (JPH 106) and Susanna and the Elders (JPH 254, 255), though, with the possible exception of the present sheet, the eight drawings are less mature in style.Provenance
Bequeathed to Francesco Raspantino; by whom sold to Carlo Maratti, after 1664; by whom sold to Clement XI, 1703; by whom bequeathed to Cardinal Alessandro Albani, 1721; from whom purchased by George III, 1762.
